Hello to one and all. I'm researching an anecdote left to us by our late mother about our maternal great-grandfather that may (or may not but I think it does) pertain to Celtic. I'm wondering if wiser heads can shine any light here. My great grandfather's name was Edward (Ned) Docherty, of Millroad Street, Calton up to about 1900. The family followed Singer to Clydebank. Ned was born in 1869 in Glasgow to John Docherty (born 1842 and went missing, presumed dead in the US around 1890) and Matilda Irvine (mid 1840s to 1915). John and Matilda were, we were told, from Derry. My mother described Ned as 'a bit of a footballer' and insisted he had some connection with Celtic. The family's chapel was St Mary's in Calton and there are a couple of generations of our family buried at Dalbeth. Ned and Catherine Higgins married at St Mary's in 1889. They're 'in the neighbourhood' for want of a better phrase. My mother said that the Dochertys were bombed out of the Holy City during the Clydebank Blitz in 1941 and moved to Partick. She recalls that when the family left (from Second Avenue, I think) Ned removed a small brass plaque from the front door of the family flat. She never said what was engraved on it but she was certain it was about Ned and a connection he had with Celtic. I'm really keen to find out what this tie is, if it did indeed exist. We're unsure what became of the plaque after Ned and Kate both died in 1943. It may have gone to my great aunt's family in Hertfordshire. That link got lost in the 1960s. If anyone can kindly shed some light, give a few pointers or constructive opinions I'd be very grateful. Mac

The only Edward Docherty in the football league/scottish football league books I have is... Docherty, Edward b. Glasgow 1871 (these are sometimes wrong) Clubs Jordanhill Partick Thistle Notts County 1892 (6 apps, 1 goal) Duntocher Harp Lincoln City 1895 (5 apps, 2 goals) He's not in the Scottish book, so I'd imagine this guy never played a competitive game for Partick. I've got the kids on my own today. I'll look through other sources when I get a chance. |

Steve, Thank you very much indeed for your reply. I'm unsure that Edward Docherty is my great-grandfather but as my information on him is scant you never know. His first and second children were born in 1890 and 1892 respectively and I believe he worked in the East End of Glasgow in that period. It is interesting that there's a Duntocher entry, however. Perhaps 1871 Edward was a West End-ish sort of feller. I very much appreciate that look-up. I do wonder if my Mum's tale is one of those that grows arms and legs as the years go on. I'll never know until I find out.

Hi Mac Have you looked at the census returns for 1891 and 1901 for Edward ? Sometimes they have (rarely) footballer as occupation. Have you checked on name variations of Docherty at all? |

Hi Camillo, An excellent suggestion. We have not checked him out in the census. That said, most of the documents we do have record him as a labourer. Fortunately, the name never varies in the Scottish records I looked at. I can't say the same for his children, whose names changed in military and US immigration records to 'Doherty'. One of my other family names is Ahern (Meath and Cork) and I've found nearly a dozen variations on that, some of them just plainly ridiculous. I count my blessings Docherty is a little more straightforward. Mac

The Scottish census returns on Scotlands People are much better than Ancestry as they are original docs. There used to be a scheme where you could get free credits for Scotlands people on Ancestral Scotland but I think that has stopped now. It is a great genealogy website but costs can rack up very quickly. |

If Steve has the dates of the Edward listed above they may coincide with a census return in England too That Edward Docherty played for Notts County around these dates 03.09.1892, 05.09.1892, 10.09.1892 and Scottish as Steve says and confirmed here. http://gottfriedfuchs.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/scottish-players-in-football-league.html and Lincoln career here http://www.redimps.com/archive3/index.mv?cat=players&drop=playerdetsdrop&play=doch01 Edited by Camillo, Nov 6 2013, 05:45 PM.
