Days before Christmas on Dec. 21, 1907, Thomas Whitney departed Scotland for Ellis Island with plans to continue on to Chicago to meet who appears to be Annie Whitney's uncle, Dan Kelly in Ladd, IL. Thomas listed "Butcher" as his occupation and is documented of having tatoos on both forearms. Also traveling with him was Annie's sister, Maggie McGuinness. Thomas left behind his wife, Annie and their four children, Patrick (6yrs), Helen "Cissy" (4yrs), Mary (2) and Anne (8 mos old). (Maggie McGuinness went on to live with her Uncle Dan Kelly, who was newly widowed and had a small child, Michael. It appears that Maggie became Michael's nanny.)
Ship manifests show that on May 15, 1909, Annie and her four children attempted to board ship but did not end up traveling that day. A week later, on May 29th, they traveled from Glasgow, Scotland to Ellis Island, where they went to meet Thomas Whitney in Ladd, IL. There is also mention of a Pat Kelly in Ladd, IL, but is difficult to read. Things must have been going well for Thomas if the family were able to travel and meet him there.
But a strange turn of events occurred on March 8, 1910 (only 10 months later). The entire family (Thomas, a very pregnant Annie, and their four children) all returned to Scotland via ship. And, while at sea, Annie gave birth to their fifth child, Thomas John Black Whitney. He got the middle names "John Black" because that was the name of the captain of the ship!
On Feb. 8th, 1912, Thomas Whitney (father) died of complications due to Diabetes and lung failure.
On April 22, 1921, daughter Helen Whitney traveled alone to Quebec where she crossed the border, later arriving in Chicago, IL. Her occupation was a "Mill worker". Her mother had paid for her ticket.
On January 15th, 1922, Annie Whitney decided to make another try for the U.S. She boarded a ship with her children Anne, Mary and Thomas, and met her eldest child, Patrick in Boston (who had returned some time before).
The first U.S. Census that included the Whitney's was in 1930, which shows that Annie Whitney remarried Thomas Quinn in approximately 1925. They were living in Chicago, IL along with Annie's sons, Patrick and Thomas "Sonny" Whitney. Patrick was a radio repairman at a furniture store and Thomas was a laborer at Spiegel's, a mail order catalog company.
