THE MAN who kept generations of Black Cats players fighting fit has died.

Johnny Watters, who spent more than 30 years as a physio with SAFC, died peacefully last weekend, aged 92.

A former Celtic player, he was the last survivor of an Old Firm derby which attracted more than 130,000 spectators.

After serving as a Petty Officer with the Royal Navy during the war, he trained as a physio and joined Sunderland in 1955.

He is survived by wife Margaret, daughters Patricia, Frances and Maura, son John, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A mass will be held at St Hilda’s Church, Southwick, at 10am on Wednesday, followed by an open gathering at the Stadium of Light.

According to AotC, John was older than Bill Boland who Celtic thought (a few years back) was the oldest Celt.

I'd love to establish some kind of 'Father of the Club' for the oldest ex-player.

I'm still on holiday here in Florida and got an early morning text (5am :ffs: ) about this from a mate whose brother is Jeff Clarke who played for Sunderland in the 70s. Jeff was arranging for ex Sunderland players to attend the funeral to be held tomorrow and wanted to see if Celtic maybe wanted to send some flowers. I contacted Tony Hamilton but thankfully the club were already aware of the situation and had posted a story on the Official Website and contacted the family.

When I checked for what I could find about John Watters on the internet, I thought there might be a possibility that he was older than Boland and like you I'm a bit frustrated that we can't be sure who is the "Father of the Club" (great term  )

A while back on Celticminded there was some discussion about the oldest player and Boland was mentioned but someone posted that their job had brought them into contact with a guy who played under Maley and was older than Boland. Unfortunately, the poster said to name him would betray a confidence and implied that maybe the ex player wanted to remain in the background
