Thomas Flood - forgotten man in our history? Reading through our history a name that pops up quite often is Thomas Flood, we read about Brother Walfrid surrounding himself with men who were the driving forces behind many of these political ideologies. men such as John Glass, Pat Welsh, Dr. John Conway, James Quillan, William McKillop, John O'Hara, Thomas Flood, J.M. Nellis, Joseph Shaughnessy and Hugh and Arthur Murphy, we also see that people like John O'Hara and Thomas Flood led the local Catholic Union committees. J.M. Nellis and Joseph O'Shaughnessy were founder members of the St Aloysius Association. James Quillan and William McKillop were leading figures in the Irish National League in Glasgow, as were Hugh and Arthur Murphy, In the Catholic Observer December of 1891 it mentions he attended the Bi-Annual meeting in the Caledonian halls in the London Road were he moved the adoption of the report? at this meeting they were discussing how good the team was doing and we will be moving as the greedy landlord was raising the rent by 9-fold from £50 to Further research shows in 1892 when the Hibs were going down the swanee, Thomas Flood left the committee of Celtic and joined Hibs, infact he actually represented them when they applied to join the league. it has left me wondering if he was on our committee and why he would leave us? there is no mention of him in Willie Maley's book although he seems to name everybody associated with us, was there a fall out and he was erased from Celtic's history? i would appreciate it if anyone can add more relating to him and his time with Celtic. Hibs went bust in 1890, not in a small part due to their secretary John McFadden absonding to America with the club funds. When they came back with no religious affiliations in 1892, Thomas Flood was elected as their Vice President. At their AGM in 1893 Thomas Flood proposed the motion that Hibs, to seperate themselves from the 3 other Edinburgh clubs, should define their objectives and make one the promotion of football amongst the young men of Irish descent who are resident in Scotland. His motion was defeated and he was ousted as Vice President and became match secretary instead. His address is given as 5 South Oxford St, Edinburgh. |

It says on that Hibs website, Hibs suffered a blow when star player James Blessington signed for Celtic. We signed him from Leith Athletic, not Hibs. |

Was hoping we could come up with something from his time at Celtic, hard to figure out why he would go east when others were going west. |

Looks like this was his reason for going east although i can remember reading he left hibs and returned to Glasgow due to his business commitment's. At first i was thinking he may have been one of the hibee sympathiser's on our committee and was wondering why he did not join the ones who started the soon to fail Glasgow Hibernian, now looks like this was definetely not the case and was probably doing a good job for us before doing a even better job for them as Vice-President. |
