Here's what I have on Alex (with birthdate added since last [2010] publication in Of Fossils & Foxes): Alex Dowdells (b. Slamannan, Stirlingshire, 25.5.1903; d. Norwich, 24.10.1974) came in to head the City training staff under David Halliday in 1956, after 16 years in a similar role with Celtic, and nine years as trainer to the Scottish national side. Having studied medicine at Glasgow University from 1933, and played at centre-forward for Wishaw and Shettleston, he'd initially held training posts with both Shettleston and the Scottish Junior international team before moving to Parkhead. After becoming a familiar sight as sponge-man through the bulk of the Matt Gillies era, Alex became the first and only non-player to be honoured with a City testimonial game – a Filbert Street friendly in May 1966 against a strong Scotland XI (the first chosen by new boss John Prentice), drawn 1-1. He retired to live in Norfolk. PT |

Just a correction/clarification to my post above on Alex, courtesy of the Probate Registers: Though Alex had indeed retired to Norfolk, and his will was proved at Ipswich, he actually passed away at the Alexian Brothers Nursing Home at Warrenpoint, County Down, on the date given (24.10.1974). Apologies for previous misinformation. PT |
