Tom was the son of an Irishman, Thomas Maley and his wife Mary Ann Montgomery. He was by profession a teacher, but among Celtic fans he is better known as one of the original team, in which he played along with his brother Willy, who later managed Celtic for many years. To his fans he was known as Handsome Tom. He later worked as a football club manager and is considered one of the best that Manchester City ever had. His wife, Elizabeth predeceased him in 1930. In 1935, Tom died of typhoid contracted while on a pilgrimage to Lourdes. R.I.P

Joseph, or Josie as he was known, was the son of Thomas Edward Maley and Elizabeth Maley of Wilton St Glasgow. He was the second child in a large family of four sons and three daughters and had a promising future ahead of him. His death cast a shadow over his family and the generation that followed. His memory was kept alive by his sisters, including my mother, who never forgot the handsome and wonderful brother they had lost.

Not such good news chaps about Tom's grave. The good news is that I found it. We located the lair details in St Kentigerns and went up tonight. Found the location.

At first glance it appears as if there is no headstone but there is a small white piece of marble poking through.

There is a small hexagonal piece of marble which may have had some inscription long ago but weathering has long since put paid to that. It may not even belong to Tom's grave as it is common for a small memorial to be picked up and placed elsewhere.

There are a couple of small holes on the back as it was originally designed to be raised to about 30 degrees. Here it is

Here is the interview - a direct connection between Tom Maley's graveside, found today by Camillo, and that of Jimmy Delaney - who lies in Cambusnethan Cemetery not far from Eddie Pearson - whose resting place was found today by Dep1977 - a teammate of Tom Maley's in the first ever Celtic team.

This is interesting - I was unaware that Tom Maley died due to typhoid. Especially after a Lourdes pilgrimage. Then thought I'd previously seen a picture of Tom and Willie in Lourdes - sure enough, Brian Wilson's Centenary book has this:

The photo byline says: "Willie Maley (middle row, far right) and his brother Tom (holding banner) on a pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1935."

This then is likely to be one of the last photos published of Tom before his death.

Found this one at the Mitchell Library at Tom Maley's funeral as the cortege arrives at the cemetery.

Wullie "Peter" McGonagle at the front followed by Jimmy Delaney with Willie Maley at the back.

In 1989 Jimmy Delaney recalled that, as Tom Maley's coffin was lowered to the grave, the Hoops were placed on it.

Tom Maley's funeral was a big one and has a good sized article in the Daily Record & the Evening Times, (front page). The Record also has a pic of Willie Maley etc behind the hearse (above).

The chief mourners were his 3 brothers, Willie, Alex and Charles.
The full Celtic Board were present as was the current team.
Surviving players from his early playing days were present (not Celtic) and there were reps from the SFA and all main clubs in Scotland including Bill Struth.

There were many floral tributes from a host of Scottish & English clubs.

The Evening Times also had a sports column mourning his loss but strangely focussed on his time at Man City.

The Herald just had the death notice as follows ;
At 6 Ruthview Avenue, Giffnock (the house of his son in law Mr Bernard J McElhinney) on 23/8/35.

Thomas Edward Maley, aged 71 years, late of 66 Wilton Street, Glasgow.

Fortified by the rites of Holy Church ; RIP. Requiem Mass in St Joseph's, Clarkston today (Monday) at 10.30 am ; Funeral thereafter St Kentigern's RC cemetery, Lambhill ; Friends are invited to meet the cortege at the cemetery gates at 12 noon.
