Weir, James (1907-10); Unconfirmed, but probably died in Redcar in 1959.

Just noticed this thread by one of Jimmy's ancestors on the wiki.

At various times I've tried to locate his resting place but haven't got anywhere.

I think that the date of birth may be for the wrong James.

I've traced this family, and the mother's name is very unique. Euphemia Wilson Girwood.

James Weir, son of Euphemia, born on 23 Aug 1887 in Muirkirk, married Annie Templeton in December 27, 1912. His address is given as Park Terrace, Muirkirk. Occupation "Goods Guard".

To confirm that I don't think this our James, our one played for Middlesbrough on the 26th and 28th.

Finally, James Girwood Weir was born in 1886 in Muirkirk to the same parents, but sadly died in infancy.

The 1911 census that has James in Middlesbrough has his birthplace as Benfoothill, Ayrshire (or Burnfoothill, Ayrshire). That matches up with his first team in the AotC.

A 1907 article said that Bolton were after Jimmy in 1906. And an Alex Weir played for Bolton in 1912-13. According to a contemporary newspaper, Alex was born in Dunaskin (one of Jimmy's former teams).

Dunaskin is at Waterside, Ayrshire. And that's near the Burnfoot Road from New Cumnock.

Strongly suggest the James Weir you're looking for was born on 7th May 1885 in Dalmellington, to James & Jessie. Burntfoothill was part of this parish.

Also very possible that this James died in Cleveland (covering Redcar / Middlesbrough) in the final quarter of 1959. No will evident.

Brilliant, thanks. Ties in with what I think I found at the same time.

He may have married Elsie Smith in Middlesbrough in 1913, and had a son (also James) in 1914.

An "Elsie Weir, Widow" died in Feb 1960, her address was given as 33 Walnut Grove, Redcar, Yorkshire.

Hi.
I have a gap in family tree concerning James WEIR and Elsie SMITH, and their family. I believe they emigrated to Australia from the UK. They had a son, who I think was also called James. He may have married a lady called Muriel. In the early 1900's James WEIR senior played football for Celtic, in Scotland, and later was sold to Middlesboro. After his football career I think he ran the Crown Hotel in Middlesboro. This would have been in the 1940s. I think they lived in Redcar at one time. The details of the last known contact are very vague. The son and his family lived in the Melbourne area and were visited by a relative, Rena. There is a verbal mention of a Donald and a Margaret WEIR. Children perhaps?
Any details gratefully received.

Billy

To tell completely all I know, in the very back of my memory is a tale that Jimmy was found dead , collapsed behind a door, and Elsie died a year later. That fits with the record that a James Weir died at Cleveland in 1959 and an Elsie Weir at Cleveland in 1960. Search of the local papers has not yielded any information, as yet.
