The Toomebridge Connection.

The Toomebridge connection is complex but important. Tom Colgan had married in 1906, a daughter of James Grant, whose family roots were in Toomebridge. However Mrs Colgan died on the birth of their daughter Mary a short time later. From a young age Mary lived at Toome House, Toomebridge with her aunt and uncle, Neil and Felcia Grant, both of whom were unmarried. From the 1920s to the 1950s Mary and her aunt Felicia would make occasional expeditions to Glasgow for major Celtic occasions although according to surviving relatives the ladies interest in the sport was distinctly limited. Mary's cousin Brian Grant recalls joining in those expeditions which took the Toomebridge party to the Bank resturant before and after the game, on to the team bus and even into the dressing rooms! When Tom Colgan retired both from business in Glasgow and as a Celtic director in 1940 he took up residence in Toome House with his daughter and the Grants. He died in 1946 and the Colgan's shares were left to Mary who thus became, when the transfer was completed in 1949, the holder of 1103 fully paid and 1150 part paid shares making her the third force in Celtic behind only the Kellys and the Whites.

Tom Colgan replaced John O'Hara on the Celtic board in 1905. The publican would serve on the board until the 1939/40 season when he retired to Ireland on health grounds.

Lads, that's him - at the play last night at Stormont I met his daughter in law, Kay Colgan - she said he is buried in Friar's Bush cemetary - the oldest cemetary in Belfast.

Access is seriously restricted, but I may have a few contacts to get me in - i'll keep you posted.

Are the rest of the Colgan's buried in Dalbeth? She's adamant that most of the family are resting in Scotland.

Amazing chuck

I'll follow up on the other Colgan's in Dalbeth

We found that Tom was staying in Toome with the Grants in 1911, and we are looking for Grant's grave. could he be in the same cemetery?

He could be chief - I'll check.

There's also Catholic cemetaries around Co. Antrim, churchyard burial sites, so he could be up there somewhere.

I'm trying to get into Friar's Bush on Tuesday, but their records are abysmal so I don't know if i'll be able to find the grave on the first visit. I've never been before, in fact not many get access at all.

Glasgow Road

Tom Colgin was the licensee of the Old Vic, 669 Govan Road for the late James Grant in 1915. He also owned the Old Govan Arms, 907 Govan Road in 1916.

Right I've got access to Friar's Bush cemetary this Saturday - they're letting me in for an hour - hopefully I can come across the grave.

There's only 60 burials listed between 1942 and 1957 and unfortunately Colgan isn't one of them - as I explained the records are really poor.

The cemetary has been closed to the public for years and years but the cemetaries guy says the place is still in decent nick - fingers crossed colgan's headstone hasn't become too weather beaten - i'll keep you posted.
