Bottom-right in this Rutherglen Glencairn team picture from 1896

Right from the first the Glens started winning trophies - among them the now defunct South Side Junior Cup, and the Cambuslang and District League. The team at that time was - Renfrew, Smith, Milligan, D Irvine, W Oswald, McKim, Dick, Morton, Sands, Wilson and Shaughnessy. The outside left was better known later in senior circles as Colonel Shaughnessy, the Celtic Director.

Ogam

Hi Guys
I am new to the board and must say I am very impressed. I am not very good with computers so bear with me. I also have a photo of him but I can't see how to post it on the board. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Came across this while looking at Glasgow Observer in Mitchell Library. I hope its of some interest. "Celtic director John Shaughnessy who joined the board in 1911, was appointed Colonel and nominated to command one of the new Service Battalions, 18th (Service) Bn. Highland Light Infantry, a “Bantam” battalion soon to be raised by the city of Glasgow under the direction of its Lord Provost William Dunlop. John Shaughnessy is a Rutherglen born solicitor with considerable experience in military matters gained through his long association with the old Volunteer Movement. After a considerable time serving with the 3rd Lanark Volunteers, he commanded the battalion which under the reforms of 1908 became the 7th Bn. Scottish Rifles T.F. He commanded for four and a half years before retiring in 1913 after sixteen years service. On the outbreak of war he became deeply involved in the formation and training of the Glasgow Citizens Training Force and in recruiting."

Col John Shaughnessy, son of Founding Father Joseph Shaughnessy, is the longest serving Celtic Director, from 1911 to 1952 with 41 years service, just a few months more than Tom White.
