Not sure I can help with anything in this one, but I seem to remember Pedro Agathe on KDS telling me he was related to Peter Scarff. Haven't spoken to him in a long time, or been on KDS in a long time either, but though that might of use. |

Weeshamrock Peter Scarff is one of the tragic heroes of Celtic. In 112 games he scored 55 goals in the inside left position having joined the club aged 20. He was a team-mate of John Thomson and Bertie Thomson, who also died tragically young. 18 days after John Thomson's accidental death on 5th September 1931 Peter took unwell during a match. After his last game at Celtic Park on 19th December 1931 Peter was admitted to a santiorium for treatment for TB. He never played football again. He died on 29th July 1933 aged only 25. At his funeral in Kilbarchan Cemetery Willie Maley laid a Celtic jersey on Peter's coffin before internment. We thank (once more :D) Lubohenrik for securing these photos of Peter's resting place: ![]() ![]() ![]()

From Emeraldbhoy1967 hey wee shamrock. Your info on peter scarff was impressive and very nearly spot on:) He died on the 9th of december 1933 and your stats were accurate. He got 1 scottish cap v N.I. in a home international. 55 goals in 112 apps is a good ratio for a midfield player. He once scored 5 goals for celtic during their tour of america, wearing a green dress shirt, v carsteels, because there wasnt enuff kit to go round. Joe kennoway, the goalie played v celtic on that tour, and was later signed on the strength of his appearance. I researched the newspaper clippings of the time, and produced a few newsletters for the club. I dont have any newsletters now, as that was 3 computers ago!! I will try and get a copy of his funeral story of the time. I guarantee you at least misty eyes or more. An interesting fact was that on approaching the family for permission, we found that celtic F.C owned the grave, and even they didnae know that. That might also be the case with others. I was the convenor of the peter scarff csc in Linwood, and we arranged about 10 years ago for the commemorative vase. The family sanctioned it. Hope that was informative |

From weeshamrock Great work there Bear!! :o The Peter Scarff Story has to be told and in proper detail too. Would definitely like to share information we all hold on him. He was certainly a significant player in a successful Celtic team (and, in my humble opinion, the Celtic team with the best haircuts of all time!). I think I read last year that his funeral took place on the morning of a game against Rangers which (thankfully) the Bhoys won? Will check that out. Could you imagine that today? There is live footage of Peter from a game (I think at Ibrox) where he and another Celt are chasing the referee after a penalty award or non-award - think it's on the History dvd. That tour of America is a fascinating story in itself - the game against Pawtucket Rangers proved a real battle, perhaps no suprise as that Rangers was the works team from the Coats factory, many of whom had migrated to the States from Ulster via Paisley. A deadly combination if ever there was one. I've got a copy of Jimmy McGrory's Tour Diary (unpublished) from the Mitchell Library. PM your email addy and you can have it. |

From emeraldbhoy1967 For all with an interest The following link displays info on Celtics 1931 tour of America. Peter Scarff featured in that tour. http://homepages.sover.net/~spectrum/year/1931.html In my last visit to the CP museum there was a menu card from the ship, on display, still in good condition. The tour itself was a bit of a riot, with a few game descending into riot. No kiddin. As wee shamrock pointed out, the game at pawtucket comprised mainly of immigrants, originally from ulster, who were the "coats" works team. I think I remember reading that on the return home, the ship docked in the foyle in derry and one James Mc Grory disembarked to get married. I think he scored that night Another interesting fact, is that when Celtic trained at seamill, Peter Scarff always roomed with McGrory, as Jimmy was a daily communicant, and they both walked it into ardrossan specially for this. From caltonbhoy1967 Jimmy disembarked to get married to Veronica "Nona" Green (of the Green's Playhouse/Apollo owning family) in Moville which is on the Lough Foyle on the way up to Derry. He got married in St.Michael's Moville on the 10th July,1931 by the Reverend J A Shields of Falcarragh. Sadly the story had a sad ending as Nona had difficulty in conceiving and tragically died on 24th April 1944 whilst undergoing an operation to try help faciitate conception. Jimmy subsequently married again to Barbara Schoning a nurse he met whilst in hospital for a hernia operation. Nona is buried in the Green Family Vault at Dalbeth and Barbara is buried alongside Jimmy also in Dalbeth. Moville is the area my Mother's side come from and some of the family still live there. My Great Uncles and some of my Uncles were Pilots (amongst other jobs they did) who used to navigate the ships up and down the Foyle to and from Derry. As it was a Custom's Motorboat that went out and collected Jimmy McGrory I doubt any of my family were involved in that. |
