I'm on the trail of a Phil Murray

Born in England 1866.
Married Ellen Graham in 1887 at St Joseph's in Blantyre.
1891

He was a miner and by the census in 1891 he had two kids Mary (2) and Philip.
Philip Junior looks to have died young as he is not listed on the 1901 census which has Mary (12), William (9), and John (7).

Could be our guy but a lot of work still to do.

I'd better buy the rights to this book sharpish.

Philip Murray Trade Union Leader-possibly the most important union leader in American History and his Father Willam arrived in New York in December 1903 on a ticket paid for by their Uncle and Brother Philip Murray,- who played for Celtic in their first ever match - (my quote in bold)

Philip Murray is buried in Saint Anne's Cemetery in the south suburbs of Pittsburgh at Castle Shannon a former mining area

In the 1950s, Murray continued to press for the political, social and economic advance of working people, leading his last major strike against the steel industry in 1952. Shortly thereafter, he died of a heart attack in San Francisco, honored by millions as a truly humane and visionary leader of the labor movement.

And he played and coached fitba

Studious Murray was but an excessive drone he was not. He was as good a ‘paddy’ storyteller as there was, a prankster who tied sleepers’ toes to bedposts in boarding houses and a soccer player who played the game (and coached his team) in a fiercely scrappy and competitive way.

A group picture taken during the year he arrived in Madison, shows the young seventeen year old Philip standing among mature middle-aged-looking men, staring out at the camera with a look of daring readiness on his face, telling all who would take notice that he was prepared for whatever challenge, physical or mental, that might be hurled against him.

Brilliant stuff C!! What a connection! A number of the men involved in Celtic's early days had strong links with the nascent trade union movement.

Which book did you find that in then?!?

camillo

Quote:

An ebook called PHILIP MURRAY: Biographical Portrait of a Union Man. There is also a feature article in LIFE magazine on Phil Murray which says,

"During Mine Lay-offs he played an indifferent outside left at soccer. His Uncle Phil recalls that he, "was too big in the feet" ever to be a really good soccer player although he later managed soccer teams with some success."

I've got all of this stuff saved on my hard drive just not sure of the best way to post it.

Wow. And wow again! This is truly impressive. Getting quotes from one of the first ever Celtic players about his nephew who became a giant of the US trade union movement. Genius! Which year is the Life article C? Sounds as though Uncle Phil might have lived to a good age also.

How about posting the details on the KDS wiki? I've started a page about Phil there (Dionagh - could you check this is formatted ok, haven't done this much before). It's entitled 'Murray, Philip'. It's easy to post/copy and paste large blocks of text as well as pics and links. Give me a shout if you need a hand.

Note: on KDS, there is mention of Phil Murray playing for Blantyre Vics v Celtic in '93:

I have a lhad who is based in NJ across the border but whose girlfriend is a lawyer who could track the information we require.

Another is asking in his CSC if they have anyone with some local knowledge of Catholic burials who could help.

The power of the Celtic family eh.

Incredible C, just incredible. A family's history laid bare before us. And what a story too.

I've contacted the guy who took those photos asking him to help us. He may be local too and able to ask around hopefully. Our Phil sadly is not on this register but I'm still hopeful one of our American Tims can come up trumps with a date of death and a burial place.

I think this story is incredible and I baggsy the film rights

It really is a story. Phil Murray and his relations had some impact across the pond. He proved a lot more successful at establishing a foothold in the US labour movement than James Connelly did. Big Phil would have been playing in Edinburgh round about the time JC returned to the city (after his spell in the British Army - but ssshhhh, that doesn't like to be broadcast too much!)

Maybe this could fit into the Connelly film script that's doing the rounds!!

Interesting development. I'm tracking Phil Murray the Union leader to see if I can see any family news which might point to where our Phil lies.

In a collection of his papers at the Catholic University of America in Washington are various historical documents. There is also a collection of photos. One of the photos amongst various union leaders is this description.

Number 28Scottish soccer player and coach (3), 1950-1951

I'd be very interested to see who that is.

"HelloC

I'm resending this e-mail as I have reason to believe you never received the 1st one I sent a while ago.

I checked with Deer Creek Cemetery and they do not have a listing for Phil Murray.
At some point I intend to go to the local newspaper and check out the obits on their micro film and see if I can locate his children Peter and William. Maybe their obits may contain some information.
In the meantime I'll hold onto your e-mail.
