Post by: lyndyloo6 on Saturday 22 November 08 21:55 UTC (UK) Hi There,
Family story is that 2 brothers palyed for Celtic. The story is that 2 grandson's of John McGoohan played for Celtic. That would probably McCann or McGoohan. However there has been a problem with the name McGoohan and all its interpretaions, so may be a McGowan....if you know what I mean. Its down to the Irish accent....I dont have the first names tahough, sorry..
regards, Lynda

Post by: lyndyloo6 on Thursday 08 January 09 20:26 UTC (UK) Hi Gadget,
Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you but I now have the names of the men . John McCann, played for Celtic 1893 1895 and Hibs later. Also Edward McCann who played for Celtic 1893. Both went on to play for clubs down south, one at Newcastle United and one at Preston North end.
Any info would be great.
Many thanks, Lynda

Post by: Gadget on Friday 09 January 09 10:07 UTC (UK) Hi Lynda
I've been through all the McCanns and I can't find them. It could be that they didn't play in the (English) Football League first teams :-\
Simon might be abole to find something for the Preston North End one.
Sorry.
Regards
Gadget

James McCann was the first president of Belfast Celtic. But I'm sure Maley would have mentioned that in his book.

Hi there.
Just to add a wee bit of background information regarding a Committee Member (1894/1895 and 1895/1896) - J McCann, John was my great grandfather.
His full name was John Begley McCann and he was born in 1860 in Milton in Glasgow. He was a Pawnbroker in the Royston/Garngad area. When he was a young boy he was at the Industrial Boys School in Abercromby Street and his sister Elizabeth was at St Anne's Orphanage, also in Abercromby Street.
Due to the fact that both his sister and himself (and possibly a 2nd sister) were looked after in Abercromby Street he accepted the philosophy of what Celtic stood for and felt obliged to donate to the club. In return for this he was given a perpetual season ticket that could be handed down through the generations. This, however, was sold back to Celtic in either the 1960's or 70's.
If anyone has any further details of JB McCann I'd be delighted to find more out about him.

Andy,
John Begley McCann was born on the 10th of June 1860 to John McCann and Margaret Begley. He married Winifred McCann (Green) on the 15th of November 1877 in Calton. He died on the 28th November 1928 at the family home at 107 Smithycroft Road in Riddrie. At this present moment in time I don't have any information where he is buried.
If you need any further information then please let me know what you need and, if I can, I'll provide you with it.
Re the season ticket, John Begley snr gave it to John Begley jnr, and instead of giving it to my father, he gave it to his sister who sold it back to Celtic for the sum of £1000. The ticket eventually would have been in my possession but for the sideways shuffle.
On another topic. My mum's cousin was Tommy Bogan who played for Celtic, my dad had a trial for goalkeeper in the mid 50's - he was also Chief Steward in the old stand, and my uncle worked as a turnstile operator round about the same time.

Andy, sorry about this. According to the 1861 Census and JB's death certificate there's a 3 year disparity. 1861 shows he was 10 months old. The death cert in 1928 shows he was 65 years when he died. On the marriage certificate it shows he was 27 in 1887.
I shall have a copy of the letter my father sent to Desmond White, and the reply he got in 1984 re the perpetual season ticket. Re the £1000, I don't have any tangible proof of this, just communication from my brother about what my father told him.
Steven
