Right

Had a look in the 1891 census

There was a Dominic J McCreadie (born abt 1863)

At that point he was married

However, in the 1881 census, he's living with his father Dominic (a spirit merchant) and he has a brother J McCreadie (abt 1861)

Lennox

According to the 1891 census (not always accurate in spelling) there was a metal merchant, 40 year old John McCready, resident in Baltic Street.

The Wee Shamrock

"Old Dominick", the head of the McCreadie family, was a major figure in the St. Andrew's (cathedral) parish and in the Irish community in Glasgow. His pub, the Old Empire Bar in the Saltmarket, was the first port of call for many Irish in the city, especially those from Donegal.

Good info on the family and the pub here:

Willie Maley in The Story of Celtic:

"A famous family in those days was the Macreadies, "Old Dominic" of that ilk having a very popular bar in the Saltmarket, where all the youth of Donegal come for a job when they landed off the "palatial" boats, which in those days did alike for human beings and cattle. Three of the Macreadies stuck to the new venture, and John Macreadie acted on comittee for three years."

The Old Empire is still a popular Celtic haunt today

Great find :notworthy:

Quote:

Son John A McCreadie went on to own his own pub at 75 Greendyke Street, John was a great football player and assisted in the foundation of the Celtic Football Club. In the winter of 1907 John caught a chill and died a fortnight later as a result in 1908, his wife Catherine then took over the licence the her son John.

Some rummaging in Google News gives us -

Well in Steve.

Recently found a portrait drawing of Old Dominic in the Glasgow Observer - in a column next to pictures of Bro Walfrid and Dr Conway! There's also the story somewhere of former director William McKillop getting out of his sick bed as his old friend Dominic's (I think Dom Jnr) funeral cortege passed his house, very touching.

One of the McCreadies went to school at the same time as some of the other founding fathers, will try and confirm details.
