Had another flick through Maley's book tonight and stumbled upon a name that I'd never noticed before in the CG forums or the Wiki, F. McErlean, committee member in 1896-97. Some of you will undoubtedly have encountered him before, but I couldn't see a thread here so decided to have a hunt.

Wasn't expecting much, but I eventually found out that he was another pawnbroker, and more relevantly, James Kelly's father-law and therefore Bob Kelly's grandad.

A quick trot off to the James Kelly thread and there's his daughter Maggie

Here's the 1891 census with James living at his address, and his marriage certificate.

Does this also answer where James was born?

Can't find a death certificate for either him or his wife. Wonder if they moved back to Belfast?

might be worth contacting chuck on the HB about this

He's been working on the Belfast Celtic stuff, and there quite a bit of overlap in the early days with board members

Sorry, jumped in two-footed there, he moved to Derry. At a guess, him mum died, leaving his elderly dad alone with the farm, and they moved back there.

For confirmation on the initial, later on in his book, Maley calls him 'Frank McErlean'

Looks like a good source for the Kelly place of birth. Great work Steve.

I know of members in Ireland who will happily help out here.

Excellent, ta.

There's a newer McErlean grave on the road from Ballynease to Bellaghy from that 1911 census.

Here's a list of burials in St Mary's Graveyard, Bellaghy

There's a Francis McErlain. Wrong spelling, and no date of death on that page. Bridget's not there though.

There is a Bridget McErlean in Drumgarner. But no Francis. His daughter was also named Bridget.

Looks like he was from Portglenone originally, thats another one for the Antrim connection, it is an Antrim name.
