You're on a roll today. :D

On the Conway headstone it says he was a writer. Can't remember the death date but think his age was on it too.

Right, he doesn't appear in the 1901 census, so he's either dead or moved from Scotland

However, checking the death records there is a Michael Cairns who dies aged 32 in 1892

This would make him born in 1858 (census guy was born abt1859)

Michael died at 33 Apsley Place - Apsley Place (as opposed to the present Apsley Street in the West End) was an old address now gone on the edge of the Gorbals/Laurieston.

Spoke to someone at the Mitchell yesterday.

Writer was definitely another form of "lawyer/solicitor" on forms around the turn of the last century

I think Michael Cairns' position here reflects one of the early conflicts in Celtic's history between the pro-Temperance League of the Cross members and the directors/players who were involved in the licensed trade. A great find!

Am sure it says 'Writer' also on the Conway monument. How sad that Dr Conway signed off his friend's death certificate and arranged for him to be buried in his family's lair - only for him to follow a couple of years later.
