Hi,

Would anybody be able to help me find a connection between the founding of Celtic and my g-grandfather Hugh Gillan, born 1857, died 1922 in Yoker?

I have recently got in touch with a cousin, who feels sure that Hugh had some part in the founding of Celtic FC in 1887 with Brother Walfrid. No clues in his obituary or Celtic records.

Apparently two of Hugh's sons, Frank (b1887) and Willie (b1892) also trained with the first team, although I doubt whether this would have been recorded anywhere. Still, would be nice to know...

Unfortunately time and money mean I am stuck in Coventry for this mystery so I would be grateful for any help/suggestions.

Thanks
Elsie

Hi Elsie

Welcome to the board.

Any other clues about the family? Where were they from? I saw your posting on Rootschat so though I'd post all of the current info.

Hugh died on 15th February 1922

Glasgow Herald February 17th 1922 it reads:......
..Hugh Gillan
Died at Smithfield Yoker
on February 15th aged 64
R.I.P Funeral Private
No flowers(by request)

Unfortunately the greatest football club in the world said they couldn't help me when I emailed them
I also contacted St Mary's Church, where Brother Walfrid was based at the time Celtic came into being, but drew a blank there too. Looks like I'm running out of options.....

Elsie

I am Hugh Gillan's grandson. My father was Willie (b.1892) (d.1945 Mexico City). Willie had a brother living in Coventry and bombed out during the war. oldest son, Hugh, also buried in British Cemetery in Mexico City. Nicholas remained in Scotland and raised Hugh's two sons. Sister Mary (?) remained in Scotland also. I recall my father's enthusiasm for football and Celtic. Keep in touch.

David

Can anyone help Elsie?

Hello Elsie,

I seem to recall having come across the name of Gillan when doing research on Celtic's foundation or early years, will try and find out for you. However Hugh isn't listed anywhere as one of the leading lights and didn't feature in any of the earliest committees which ran the club.

Do you know which parish he was based in? Most of Celtic's founders had links with St. Mary's although Bro. Walfrid was headmaster of Sacred Heart school in Bridgeton when the club was formed.

Any other information at all about Hugh's life would also be helpful.

Best wishes
