Great photos! The couple were my parents. I had told them about CGS and your interest in David- they were up in Glasgow visiting and decided to go and pay respects to him and other members of our family in Dalbeth. They said Bernard the foreman was great and very helpful. They managed to locate the grave with the help of the photos you had posted so many thanks!

Hi Guys,

Great detective work & great site, fantastic to find the Wedding and Death Certificates from our Gt Gt Grandad on here.

I have been talking with my cousin Dom (Raff see below) & my Uncle in New Zealand (Dr Ken Meikleham) about our Great Great Grandfather David James Meikleham.

I can confirm that our Gt Gt Grandfather was indeed a shoe maker & the family tree that Dom mentioned is correct.

My most treasured possesion is an SFA Cup winners medal that was given to our Gt Gt Grandad & it is engraved on the back David James Meikleham (whom I was named after).

I am sure that our Gt Gt Grandad will be pleased to know that two of his Great Great Grandsons still have a love for the Celtic Football Club.

Keep up the great work.

David James Meikleham

Excellent David - wonderful to read that you're named after the great man himself and that the love for the club has passed on through the generations. Great to read that you've still got the Cup winners medal - which year is it from? It was great to see how much info (and the pics) have been unearthed on this thread, and the grave stone is still in great nick. And very close to many of the club's founding fathers also.

Hi Weeshamrock,

Our Grandad's parents Gt Grandad (David James Meikleham) & our Great Gran (Mary Grace) are also in the same cemetry along with my Great Uncle (Canon Fr Tom Meikleham) whom was very dear to us all. Also, our Gran's mum Great Gran Lucy McGhee whom again was a very special family member.

I have visited our Great Grandparents grave and was at Canon Tom's funeral.

Next time I visit I will visit our Great Great Grandad at the same time to pay my respects to a fine man.

Thanks again guys.

Regards

David

Next time you're around give any of us a shout on the board and we'll show you how close your Gt Gt Grandfather is buried to his fellow founding fathers of the club. I've been meaning to ask if anyone has been maintaining the stone as it really is in great shape.

And being greedy, is there any chance of posting a photo of the medal as I'm sure the rest of the board members would love to see it too.

Hi Camillo,

Thank you for your kind offer of showing me around. I am trying to tie up with my cousin Dom (Raff) to pop up and see a game soon so we will give you guys a shout.

I live in Manchester & Dom is based in London/Kent so needs a bit of planing!

I will take a picture of the medal & post anon.

I have found out a few new things about my own family history from this site.

Thanks to all again.

David

Hi Calton Bhoy
Dom, is my cousin (my Dad's sisters son).
Our Grandad was not a mad keen football but always kept a beady eye on Celtic results!
Dom and I both like our football.
I have ended up in Manchester supporting Man City & Celtic obv'!
Lots of interesting tie ups down the years with City & Celtic including two of our greatest ever players...

Tom Maley & Billy McNeil.

I will keep in touch.

Found a note in the bankrupcy pages from the Glasgow Herald at the end of 1900.

SCOTCH BANKRUPTS .
Glasgow Herald (Glasgow, Scotland), Saturday, November 24, 1900; Issue 282

There's a follow-up entry in the Examinations section in the December 8, 1900 edition.

And using that address, I found a letter he penned to the Glasgow Herald in 1893 about a strike at his business.

Not Celtic related, but just want to bookmark this somewhere as it might be useful for someone.

Steve- only just had a chance to properly look at the new site and reply to your post. Thank you for your time + research into my Great Great Grandfather David- I didn't know anything about his bankruptcy or other troubles- fascinating. From looking at birth certificates and censuses it seems that shoe making was in the family for several generations.

Great story Raff. Would love to know how it developed. Serious link with the shoemaker industry in the early committee.

Can I share these pics Raff?

Hi Guys

Another couple of interesting facts to add to the picture. From the reports of the Celtic winning the Glasgow Cup of 1895 the paper (Daily Record) mentions Davie Meikleham as the ex custodian of the cup (Celtic already held it) and that he was one of the Old Queen's Park members. According to Davie, Queen's Park, like Rangers sprung from Glasgow Green.
