The David Meikleham who is at Rest near John Glass in Dalbeth has the same Date of Death on the headstone 5/5/1938 - I am fairly sure he will be The Committee Man then Leaseholder

Hello
My Name's Dom Rafferty- I'm a Celtic supporter living in London. I just heard about the Society on the Celtic Underground podcast- which was great by the way.
David Meikleham is my great great grandfather! I have tried to find out more about him from books in the past but haven't had much luck until now.
You're right- he's the one from Rothesay who died in 1938. I have a copy of our family tree which starts with his father, William Meikleham, and mother, Janet Temple. He married Robina McLaughlin (as above) and had 13 children- David, Madge, Jessie, Charles, William, Ruby, James, Mary, Frankie, Ruby, Christine, Stephen and Anne. Of these, David married Mary Grace and had my grandfather, James Meikleham. Mary is also buried in Dalbeth I think. James' brother, Fr. Thomas Meikleham, died in Jan 1999 and is in Dalbeth. I think it was him who drew up the family tree that I have and sadly there are no dates of birth or death on it.
My Gran, Rita Meikleham (nee McGhee) was friends with Willie Maley and knew the Kelly family. We have some very old family photos and also copies of documents from the founding of the club in the family so I'll see what I can find.
Any more information about Meiklehams' resting places in Dalbeth or elsewhere would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to do all this- finding my great great grandfather's marriage and death certificates on here is unbelievable

Hi Raff - Welcome to the Board.HH

Fascinating that your Great Great Grandfather is David - Must be really cool to know someone in the family was a member of Celtic's First Committee and helped shaped Celtic in Our formative years.

Any info/documentation you can come up with would be greatly appreciated - You may have some gold dust.

One of the Bhoys either St.Martin or brotherwalfrid has I think a photo of David's headstone - I am sure they will put it up for you - If they don't have one we will get one taken and sort you one out.If I remember correctly David himself is the last family member whose name appears on the headstone.

David and other family members are at Rest in a part of Dalbeth Cemetery where most of Celtic's Founding Fathers lie - His grave is close to John Glass,The McKillops and Barney Battles the Celtic Player.

Next time you are in Glasgow for a game or otherwise pm Admin in advance and we will arrange for you to be taken round Dalbeth and in particular visit your Family's lair.

Raff,

That's great. Welcome to the board and the society. We've dome some work but the information you could provide will be invaluable as it will enable us to possibly identify the stories of more of the founders and maybe even give us a clue as to where they rest.

Delighted to see your post this morning and as cb says we'll happily show you Dalbeth next time you're around.

Welcome aboard Raff!!!

Brilliant post, delighted that our digging around has helped unearth a bit of your family history. We hope to find out more about David and his role in Celtic's foundation. Keep an eye out here!

Needless to say any photos or documents from the early days would assist us tremendously - post them on the board if you can, we'll be happy to help further.

Hail Hail!

David Meikleham 1852 - 1938

This is David with his wife, Robina (see marriage certificate, above). The label has been added. I would guess this would be from sometime in the late 1800s, possibly around the time the club was founded. As seems to be the case with many of the men on the Committee, David, a shoemaker, appears here to be comparatively affluent for the East End of the time.

Raff,

The three tiered headstone behind David's in camillo's pictures is the Resting Place of John Glass - Brother Walfrid's right hand man.

Sadly what he think would have been a Celtic Cross on the top of that headstone is missing - That is the sort of issue we hope to rectify.
