John Wheatley was one of the most significant individuals who came from the Irish community of Glasgow's east end (around Baillieston). A minister in the first ever Labour Government (for housing) he is credited with swinging the Catholic vote of the west of Scotland firmly behind the Labour Party. He had various links with Celtic's founders and especially Thomas White, who took over the running of the Glasgow Eastern Standard newspaper which Wheatley had started.

He is buried at Dalbeth, only a few lairs from his friend and colleague Tom White, in what was the biggest political funeral in Glasgow since that of John McLean.

Wheatley also founded the Catholic Socialist Society and was responsible for the 1924 Housing Act one of the most important pieces of progressive legislation ever seen up til that point. His vision led to a massive increase in affordable housing which was a product of the conditions he had witnessed in his formative years in the East End (He was the MP for Shettleston)

He was friends with most of the significant figures in Red Clydeside and never wavered in his beliefs as to what was required to change society. He was also responsible for the production of a booklet entitled "The Catholic Workingman"

Here is part of his election address for the 1924 General Election

Interesting. I came across his death notice in the mitchell last week. I only had the 1930 microfilm out so it must have been then, possibly in the earlier part of the year.
