Robert Hoskins did some research a few years ago on all those Celts who were killed in WW1. His article is here with references to the war graves.

This also

On returning to Scotland after he had been presented with his medal by the King, he was feted by the whole football community and received standing ovations at both Parkhead and Ibrox on the same day at both semi-finals of the Glasgow Cup. William Angus was injured during the incident but survived into old age and retained his interest in football being a president of Carluke Rovers. He is buried in Carluke.

Has it ever been clarified which games William Angus actually played in for us?

He did not play any 1st team games but I have come across a couple of Friendly matches he played in which may include the trial game in which Patsy Gallacher played in and was signed by Celtic immediately after.

VT. Can you put up the details of the matches. I've come across his granddaughter on WW1 forum and there is some uncertainty about his links with us.

I think it could be a great service if we could contribute something to the family in terms of giving them details of Willie's life before the War.

My understanding is that she is may be writing a book and it would be a shame if the Celtic details were uncertain.

Acknowledgment from the Club

The Scotsman - Friday, 23rd July 1915, page 4

CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB' S CONGRATULATIONS.

Corporal Angus was for two seasons connected with the Celtic Football Club, and Mr William Maley, the Secretary, has addressed a letter of congratulation to Cpl. Angus's father. He says:— " I beg to offer you, on behalf of my club, and personally, our sincerest congratulations on the brilliant achievement of your son, Willie. That he may come back to you all safe and sound is now our most earnest prayer, and we trust that you may all be long spared to each other to happy and prosperous days. I can safely say that no club ever had a more willing or conscientious player, and one who always showed by his cleanness that fine spirit which has in his army life enabled him to do the deed which has earned him a world's acclamation, and, I am sure brought great pride to the folks at home who have followed his career anxiously."

The Record of Pre-WII Scottish League players states that Willie signed for Celtic on 3rd October 1911 and that had spells on Loan with Vale Of Leven. However, a Eugene MacBride note states Willie signed on 14th October 1911.

There is a possibility that Willie played against an Army Team from Maryhill Barracks at Celtic Park on Wednesday 25th October 1911. Eugnene MacBride states that the Celtic Team that day also contained Patsy Gallacher who was signed after this game.

I also have a note that Willie played for Celtic in a Benefit Match against a Junior XI at Dalmuir on Monday 6th May 1912. Celtic won the match 3-0 with Jimmy Quinn scoring 2 goals and Partsy Gallacher the other. The Celtic Team was as follows:

Mulrooney
McGregor
Willie McStay
Willie Angus
Dodds
McMenemy
Nichol
Gallacher
Quinn
Gibson
Brown

Given who requires the information, I would suggest that a visit to the Mitchell Library is needed to find copies of the newspaper reports to confirm the above. I will be at the Mitchell on Saturday 24th July and can check it then and also look for any other appearances.

He certainly did not play a first team competitive game for Celtic but if I can get a copy of a one of the above match reports then Willie's granddaughter would be able to say Willie played alongside some of the Club's biggest legends.

I have a picture in a book at home of Willie attending Celtic Park on his return from war and being led by James Kelly and Willie Maley (both of whom lost close relatives in that war).

Have more info from the Glasgow Observer of the time, will try and get it posted soon.

An amazing story, a wonderful man. We can also nail the lie put about by bigots that his connection with our club was somehow tenuous with the information presented here.

Can someone remind me - any other Glasgow football teams with a former player and a supporter (James Stokes) awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery??? (That's a search that won't take very long)
